Bagpipe Sales and Service in the Pacific Northwest

1953 R.G. Hardie w/ Full Ivory Mounts

$2,300.00

These pipes are being offered as sticks & stocks. If ordered with a bag, they can be setup for you if requested.

The pipes have had two owners and were originally played by a member of the Portland Scottish pipe band in the 60's and come with a hard case with a Portland Scottish plaque on it. I played these pipes from 1999 to 2009 with the St. Andrew's Pipes and Drums and the River City Pipe Band, and used them in performances and competitions throughout Oregon and Washington.

The sticks and stocks are fully mounted with ivory. There are a couple of partial cracks in the ivory on the blowstick stock that were there when I purchased the instrument and the cracks have not grown. (See last photo for close-up of partial cracks.)

I did not want to drill out the original blowstick so I had a new blowstick made with a larger diameter bore - the imitation ivory is a little lighter shade than the original ivory. (Pipes are sold with both blowsticks.)

The Hardie chanter tunes to 466 (Bb) using Soutar chanter reeds. The high G has to be taped down a bit with the modern reeds. The rest of the notes can usually be played untaped. I used EZee-Drone reeds with the screws turned most of the way out to tune to 466. It would probably be better to use the long Ezee-Drone reeds but I did not have them at the time.

In bands I played these pipes with Naill and Soutar chanters that tuned to 470-480. I used Henderson carbon fibre drone reeds when playing with the band chanters.
